The Challenge

A leading hand tool manufacturer required a production partner to manufacture a newly acquired product line with annual demand exceeding 30,000 units. The project involved a complex manufacturing process that included welding, polishing, sandblasting, and black oxide finishing. While S&F Machining specializes in precision manufacturing, managing a high-volume production program of this scale presented a unique opportunity that required careful planning, additional resources, and process optimization.

The Solution

Our team began by reviewing engineering drawings and existing samples to identify potential manufacturing challenges and opportunities for improvement. We worked closely with the customer's cross-functional teams to align on production timelines, capacity requirements, and cost objectives.

To support efficient, repeatable production, we developed a comprehensive manufacturing process that included degreasing, pre-weld polishing, two-stage welding, post-weld polishing, sandblasting, and black oxide finishing. Prototype production and detailed time studies allowed us to validate cycle times and establish accurate, competitive pricing based on real-world manufacturing data.

To meet volume requirements, S&F Machining invested in new sandblasting equipment, expanded its workforce, and implemented inventory management systems to effectively control both incoming components and finished goods. Rigorous visual and dimensional inspections were incorporated throughout the process to ensure consistent product quality prior to shipment.

The Results

The program was successfully launched and scaled to maintain a reliable delivery schedule to a minimum quantity of 700 units per week.

Through process optimization, strategic investments, and close collaboration with the customer, S&F Machining delivered a dependable high-volume manufacturing solution that met quality, schedule, and performance expectations, resulting in a highly satisfied customer.
